4d + 23 = 3d + 36
d = 13
g = 52

let D have x apples
so apples G has = 4x
Later, as in the question
(4x+23)/(x+12) = 3
=> 4x+23=3x+36
=>x=36-23= 13
So D has 13apples and
G has 4 * 13 = 52 apples to begin with

Accordingly
x=4y
now,x+23/y+12=3/1
so,3y +36=x+23
subst x=4y
now
3y+36=4y+23
y=36-23=13
therefor,x=4*13=52

the answer is G had 52, D had 13.
52+23=75
13+12=25
75/25=3
I didn't really have a mathematical formula for that, i just used guess and check- sorry....
