I am a college student and it seems as though every thing is going wrong in my life. My car just recently broke down, I just moved to this neighborhood thats in the middle of nowhere literally. I have no money and all my family are totally strapped for cash. I sit at home 5 out of seven day of the week ad i'm totally starting to become depressed. I just don't know what to do. I know i need a job i just dont know how i'm going to maintain it without any vehicle and living nowhere close to any businesses. Any suggestion

I've been in a similar situation in the past, but one of the overwhelming emotions that I felt was the feeling that I was not in control of my life. That everything that seemed to be happening to me seemed to be happening because I or someone else had made some decisions that complicated my life, and took some of the enjoyment out of living. I can tell you what I did in my situation.

One word: Simplify.

Get back to basics. Make time for the things you enjoy doing. Discard the things that you are doing that are not important to you. If you can't discard them because of obligations, than procrastinate. Procrastination is healthy, provided it doesn't last too long. Most of the crap we have to do on a daily basis is unimportant. Prioritize. List the things you have to do in a day in order of importance. All the stuff on the bottom of the list can wait, and SHOULD wait. The top of your list should be finding a job. Money, to a certain degree, does buy happiness... it allows us to do the things we have to do, as well as the things we want to do. It helps to make a person feel valuable. Ask people for help, and let them know that you are relying on them and that you appreciate them. If you need transportation, ask someone. If you can find a job, it shoudn't take long to get enough funds to fix your car. Save... don't spend money foolishly, but always treat yourself to something... even if it only something small that you want or enjoy. Working without the little rewards takes some of the enjoyment out of working for yourself. Take little steps, and if oppurtunity knocks, answer the door. If it doesn't knock, make your own oppurtunities. No job is too crappy when you have no job. Even fast food or pumping gas brings a paycheck. Be patient, it always gets better. Good luck...

It's all about cost vs. payoff my friend.

Now, I'll assume you can't take the bus. But a taxi is available.

But wait, you say, taxis cost a lot.

Yes they do, but your income will be greater once you deduct the taxi fares, than if you had remained unemployed. Especially if you make a deal with a driver, they tend to love regular customers and will give you a cheaper rate if you guarantee them your business.

Now, I'll assume that, for whatever reason, that can't happen. There's two major options available.

A: Move to a better neighbourhood. It'll be an inconvenience, and it may cost you some money. A drawback is if you've signed a 6 month lease or so, but there's ways out of it.

B: Move in with a relative. It's MUCH cheaper, and odds are there's some manner of work or a transporation hub near one of them.

Cost saving measures: Find yourself a roommate. I know you're sacrificing some privacy, and you may be nervous, but it halves the rent and utilities, which is a lot of money you can spend on other things.

Stop eating out, stop buying video games, etc etc. Heck, unless you NEED it, you can always disconnect from the internet for a quick few bucks a month saved.

As you're in college, you might qualify for student loans, student grants, burseries, or assistance of some kind, some you gotta pay back, some you don't. And unless you're a philosophy major that ISN'T going into Law, odds are you'll be able to pay back student loans quite easily.

In regards to getting out and about, away from your apartment.

Take up a club of some variety, doesn't have to be connected to college or anything. There's plenty of cheap ones out there. A few recommendations are Martial Arts, (you build confidence, which you sound like you might need, and the chicks dig it [apparently]) jogging, community theater, or volunteering.

Another good choice, I don't know if you have it where you're from, but here we have something called "Toastmasters," it teaches public speaking skills and confidence for such applications as business and how to separate an attractive someone from their clothing. (If you catch my drift.)

Whatever happens though, remember, don't expect things to magically get better just by letting them sit. Get up, get out, and do something. Even if that something is incredibly stupid and actually sets you back, you're still in a different position from when you started, with different possibilities.

Good luck, I'm pullin' for yeah.

Don't worry, everything will turn out in the end. College years are a very tender part of life, especially financially speaking. The best thing to do really is find a job. As for transportation, perhaps you could ride your bike, or if the nearest town is far away, have a friend give you a ride until you can get back up on your feet. If all else fails, there are online jobs or if needed, perhaps you could live with a family member. Best wishes to you. Good luck.

Don't let anything stop you and you won't fail. You have to find some sort of faith that everything is going to be okay and hold onto that. Get your hind end out there and walk all over town to find work and then fight to keep that job, ride or no ride!
