the car runs in open loop (computer status) till it warms up then switches to closed loop when it warm. when it switches to closed loop it starts to use all the sensors on the car to tell the computer what is goin on. You have a bad sensor somewhere and the easiest way to find it tis to have somebody do a diagnostic on it.If you get a manual for $15 dollars it will tell you how to get the codes out of it to figure out what is wrong. Anything before 1996 is obd1 and is easy to diagnose for the home mechanic. email me if you need more info or greater detail

my friends grand am did that and it was the the crank position sensor... it is most likely a timing sensor involved with you spark system... try ithe car til it dies again then check for spark and if its weak of not there then you can be sure...

You may want to look at your fuel..i.e. check fuel injectors. May consider crank position sensor or cam position sensor as well.
Can be a number of things.
