My potential boss wants to relocate me to another city but I'd rather stay where I am coz of the hefty amount I put in for my accommodation arrangements. I will lose about 10k-15k if I decide to move out. My boss gave me the notice only 2 days back and I am yet to join tomorrow only. Can u help me on how to approach this issue? I don't want to appear as if I am not interested in this job and I also don't want to get sacked for this request.

Well it really depends on what you want to do. . .if you think the job is better for you in the long run-you should probably take it. It should pay off if it is, in fact, a good move. But if you have your doubts then you should just tell him you don't think it would be in your best interest, unless of course he's planning to assist you with the expenses of moving. A lot of jobs will pay a bonus for relocating, so I would check into that also. But of course, if you would rather be where you are, then that's where you should be.

It's very unusual and not good business to bring this up with a new employee on such short notice. It's far more common for this to come up during the hiring process.

My suggestion is to talk to your new boss and say that you'd rather not relocate for various reasons. Perhaps they'll let you stay.

If not, you can always approach the HR/Personnel department and raise this with them. Say that it was never mentioned during the hiring process and you were hit with it 2 days before starting, which stinks. Maybe they'll override your boss, which is within their power. The last thing they want is grounds for a lawsuit and unfair or deceptive hiring practices is certainly a good one.
