When your character completes a mission/dungeon, he earns XP, and with enough XP, you gain a new level. It usually takes a few thousand XP to go up a level.

Each new level, you gain additional hit points, your attacks improve, your saving throws improve, you get more skill points, spells, and every 3rd level an extra feat.
Your DM or fellow players will be happy to help you level up so you don't miss anything.

Dungeons and dragons is the name of a roleplaying game franchise. To answer your question is a hard one, because your question is so vague... are you asking about the different versions, being basic, advanced, or online...... or are you asking about the different levels characters can become?

there are also different versions of each basic, advanced, or online available... 2.0 advanced D&D being most played. 3.5 Ad&d being the newest.

you have to modify your question more to help us answer better.
