Gaul was an area that is roughly modern France that was inhabited by a number of Germanic tribes.
After the Roman empire collapsed in the west and lost control of Gaul, the Franks, one of the Germanic tribes, took over most of the region. "France" came out of that.

Although the area known as France was conquered by Romans, then Burgundians, Franks and Normans, they've never forgotten the Celtic Past. Thus France's leader during WWII was proud of his name, Charles de Gaul. One area of France was settled by British Celts fleeing Roman Occupation. Brittany.
