because when hiking, I'm not in a hurry. Also, there is an unspoken comradery amoung those in the outdoors because they're sharing the same experience. I've always enjoyed how pleasant everyone is 'on the mountain'

People in the street don't know what others are up to. At least when you're out hiking, the people you meet have something in common with you so it's easier to be a little more open.

I get greeted by people in the street or at the store! I talk to anybody and everybody!

makes them feel more like travelers out on an adventure
the same as all yachtsmen who wave at each other ,and some of them are not even gay.
