The mitochondria represents a factory because it is in the mitochondria that produces the energy for the cell. The little folds in the mitochondria, called the cristae, convert glucose, or sugar, into ATP. That ATP has energy, like a battery, that can be used almost anywhere else in the cell. So the mitochondria is an ATP factory, churning out ATP molecules for the cell to use.
