If I go to a dept store and buy a new remote, can I just put batteries in it and make it work, or do I have to do something special? My TV is a JVC. Do I have to buy a special remote for that TV. This has never happened to me before.

You should be able to get a universal remote from any electronics store. They work with most Tvs etc. but it is a good idea to write down the model no. of your TV and take it with you. Ask the person at the store and they should be able to confirm that it will work with your TV.

You can purchase a universal remote at Target, Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, etc. Look on the back to see if JVC is listed under the TV heading. Some remotes are for televisions only. Some are for more electronics. For example: a TV and a VCR; or a TV and a DVD player; or a TV a VCR, and a DVD player; some control each of those and a stereo or home theater system; some also control a satellite dish. Whatever brands can be controlled by the universal remote are listed on the packaging, usually on the back. The price varies from less than $10 to more than $30. Yes, a battery will be needed. The packaging will tell you what kind of battery or batteries, and how many. Inside the packaging you will find instructions on how to program the universal remote. You will look for the JVC TV listing, where you will find several sets of numbers. The instructions will tell you what to push on the remote to program the TV, after which you will put in one set of numbers using the number keypad on the remote. Then, the instructions will tell you what to do next to find out if those were the correct numbers for your TV; such as, see if you can turn the TV off and on. If not, you will start the process over, entering the next set of numbers. You will continue this until the remote controls your television. If you have a remote which will control more than one electronic applicance, you will follow these steps for each appliance.

You can order a new remote specifically made for your tv from the manufacturer, but that is apt to be pricey. The alternative is to buy a universal remote. They come with directions which are usually fairly simple to follow.
