When editing I've found the best bet is to get into a workshop (google writers workshops by genre that you are writing). This insures two very important things:

1. you will get better at editing yourself, and thus get better at writing.
2. You will have discresion in who sees your work. Most workshops put passwords on their sites so no one can read the work but those signed up.

Editing becomes better with practice. In the few years I've been involved with workshops I've improved drasticly, and even gotten published. I'd recomend them to anyone.

Would definitely be interested in helping. It's a field that I'm trying to get into so any references would be handy. Word of advice though, no matter who you choose to finally edit your book make sure that you have some sort of record that it was you that wrote it. I think one original method was to keep a draft in a bank's safety deposit box. It will cost you but that's better than someone ripping you off and publishing your hard work under their name.
