Reaching a goal can be luck dependent but there can be always a better luck next time. Knowledge is a part of efforts needed to reach the goal, quite indispensable.

Statistically you're better off with knowledge, but things rarely go exactly according to plan - even for the best and brightest.
I think it's important to be flexible. Neither path is certain.

I asked Jay Leno a version of this question (on our way to Howard Beach for a slice) and he said showing up is MUCH more important than talent. The talented guy gets drunk the night before an interview and sleeps in while you arrive well rested and on time ... you get the job.

i think persistency more than the two. i guess knowledge is closer to your definition of luck then. the knowledge that persistency pays off.
