They are not controlling your freedom of speech that you are using to ask questions on the internet which is not controlled by the government on your computer that you have the freedom to choose what kind you want in your house, mobile home, or apartment that you got to chose and perhaps even own through a government loan in the state you choose to live in inside the borders of a country you are free to leave.

What exactly is the government controlling?

I think you might have mistaken a word "free" with a phrase "no law."

America is a free country. You can think, say, and do, whatevery your heart desire in the confind of our legal system. Of course, by 'free' it doesn not mean free of consequences of your actions either.

Certain actions are permitted under the law, but you will face social and other consequences if you do certain things.

Our legal system exist to protect your right as well as all others. You cannot do things freely if that action will harm others, directly or indirectly.

If you are a minor, your parents will further restrict what you can do as they are responsible for most of the consequences of your actions.

Just what do you intend to do, and who are 'they'?
