Make sure you have to preform a successful experiment. Experimentation is a lot like cooking leave out a key ingredient and the cake or pie or whatever is never the same and the dog may turn their nose up at it as well.
Though in this case you may not want the dog nosing around, so the second thing you need is to make sure only those people concerned with the experiment are around. No dogs, cats, pets, sisters, brothers etc.
The third thing you want is good equipment, a house of cards for a experiment of flame may not be the best equipment and you shouldn't settle for less than what you need.
The fourth thing is to have something on hand in case the experiment goes hay wire, something to correct the situation or to make it better or to put it out.
And lastly be in good physical shape, because if all else fails you may have to make a RUN to some place that is safer than where your experiment is..

1. Read ALL of the instructions before beginning the experiment.
2. Wear protective eye coverings (i.e. safety goggles)
3. Wear an apron.
4, Make sure that all glassware is clean so there won't be a reaction with residue left previously.
5. No food or drink near the lab station.
6. No clowning around.

make sure you follow the process of your experiment step-by-step and don't deviate from it and you should be ok
