I think it means that you have to make sacrifices to obtain what you want. That things in life are not just handed to you.

There was a high school where I grew up... It was in a very up-scale neighborhood... Every one refered to the students as "Cake eaters"... This was due to the "rich kid" label that they all had.

It actually sprung up after Marie Antoinette made the famous statement," Let them eat cake!" She said that statement in response to the citizens in France uprising , and part of their complaint was food shortages. This was the "buzz" response shortly before she was beheaded.

The popular meaning of it today is when you have things so good, you can't expect to be able to gloat about it.

I always hated that phrase. Why would you want to have cake if you weren't going to eat it?

I think it means that, after you eat your cake, you don't have it anymore, and so you can't continue to admire it (if it's one of those very well decorated cakes) or continue to eat it.

Its just a saying. It more or less means that you can't have everything in life that you want and its not always easy to get what you want either. Its just a dumb saying that someone made up.

I think that it means that you can't have everything you want. You have to make choices/sacrifices and let other things go.

Referring to a consumable item that is desirable, you cannot have the joy of owning it, while also having the joy of consuming it, because once consumed, it is gone.
