The boss should NOT be bossy. I know a few bosses who were good friends of mine that stayed that way by being polite but slightly firm. Also, if someone asks why you want them to do something, explain it to them. Never say, "Because I told you to."

Yeah... Take a few tips from Love & Logic Parenting techniques. Seriously. I got a promotion to a supervisory position about the same time I was attending the parenting class a friend was teaching (so I could critique for her). Funny thing is, it worked just as well on my crew as it did on the kids. LOL.

Beyond that... be fair. Don't talk about employees with others. Never ask your people to do anything you wouldn't do yourself. Recognize people who contribute and don't steal credit. Good luck!

Talk to your people and see if they think any changes need to be made or if there are issues that need to be addressed. Tell them that if they are not comfortable speaking in the group that you have an open door policy.

Don't just start making changes randomly because you can. God that ticks people off.

Also make 1 day a week or a month when you bring in bagels or donuts or something special.

Mastery of others begins with mastery of the self. Have a good understanding of where you are good at. Capitalize on that. Then you may start sharing that which you have to others. As a leader, reach out to them. Be genuinely caring.

Don't be a dictator and don't be a buddy either. Be responsible, fair, ethical and kind. Make well thought out decisions that take into consideration people, not just money. People first always works.

Do not ever give off the impression that you talk behind other peoples' backs. Stay fair and objective and diplomatic if you want to maintain the respect of the people you lead.

Just remember that you were once the underdog and not the leader and remember how you felt. Don't let it go to your ego. Keep in mind those you are leading.
Good Luck!

Never ask your subordinates to do something you yourself would not do. And please do not ask anyone to spy on others for you. All you have to do is lead by example and you will probably be the best boss in the building. Not to mention admired and respected too.
