Its not saying God has a penis. His image is humankind. You can look at a male dog and a female dog and see they have the same dog image, as you can look at a female cat and a male cat and say they have the same cat image. So If god supposedly made everyone in his image, you look at a woman and a man and can tell they are of the same.

Well as at least one person has put it, it means our full nature is what is in the image of God. Three parts to God, three parts man. Now man had no one for himself, no help. All the animals had a female for every male. God had not made man until after man had named every creature.
God then said that man should not be alone. So he then created woman for the man as someone to help him. Besides we would not be here if not for the women that God had created for man.

God created Adam first and he created man in his own image. However Eve came from some of Adams body parts (that's where the word woman came from). So in a way men and women are made from his image.

Funny - I keep asking the same question. (Substitute "men" for "women")
Seriously - God is a spirit, not some old man. When the Bible was translated, the word did not come out as genderless because we don't have a genderless pronoun, but in the Garden, in the original hebrew, God was not a female or male pronoun.

A-ha! In the beginning of the Bible, God seems to be conversing with himself quite a bit. This indictes the communication with, perhaps, his male and female side. D'ya think?
This would explain how God realized Adam was lonely and needed a mate. And Eve was made out of Adam's rib, a part of Adam, who was made in the image......oh, I see you get it now.

God is neither a man nor a woman. We refer to "HIM" because it has become the default term to use. we are all made in his image, but not exactly on how He looks like or what your pointing out... the gender. we are like Him on the way we are. it's beyond the physical or biological aspect.. it's more of our nature and morality as human beings.

God is not a man! To say God is a man, or only male is idolatrous. God is spirit.

Man used in that way is refering to being upright walking, and having arms, hands, legs and feet, as being apart from the animals.
When "man" is used in the bible, he is refering to humans.
He made us to mirror what he looks like.
