I always hear about genetic engineering being used to make people smarter or stronger, but it seems to me that our biggest weakness as a species is that we are so cruel.
Do you think it is possible (or a better idea) for genetic engineering to be used to make us kinder instead of smarter or stronger?

That would mean that the aggressive people would rule the world...I mean the people that weren't genetically engineered right? The greatest asset we have to beat ignorance and cruelty is actually the aggressive side of ourselves. At least that's what I think. The problem is controlling that side for it to be constructive rather than destructive.

Aggression is multifactorial meaning that it comes from several sources such as genetic and environmental factors (as are the above examples), you could theorotically manipulate the genetic aspects to get a calmer human being but could you control the negative, hate-filled environment that many people endure?

I don't suppose you'd need genetic engineering to remove cruel traits, perhaps selective breeding would do. After all, you don't use pit bulls to herd sheep, we bred sheep dogs for that. Of course, that wouldn't remove the meanies from the planet, just create a population of nice folks.
