I don't think you are a racist. This is a good question. Most white people are totally in the dark when it comes to the black culture so it is difficult for whites to understand how this could happen. I have spent a great deal of time with blacks and have come to understand them pretty well. If I were to explain the answer on this forum it would offend the black population and I don't want to do that. The best way for you to find out is to spend time with a black friend and their family. You will have to be observant and discover the answer for yourself. If you bring it up to them and you aren't "in" with them enough you will offend them.

I just read cowgirl's answer below and yes that is racist. where did you find out black people take up most prison space. and what do you mean observe the black pop. to understand us. what are we to you, lab rats?

do you think you're racist for asking this question? they comprise a large number of the prison population for a variety of reasons including being guilty of the offense, mistakenly identified, mistakenly accused, in the wrong place at the wrong time, serving a harsher time for lesser crimes. plus we have a judicial system that is not colorblind, and is not really geared toward keeping men of color out of jail, particularly if they're not guilty. for men of color, particularly black men, its guilty until proven innocent.
that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Myself being Brown not Black, and never been to jail living in a middle class neighborhood. There are a lot of people that think that all African Americans are alike but that's not true.

population is equally diverse.
