According to AFI, the answer is "Citizen Cane," but personally, I would say "Wizard of Oz" has had greater impact over a longer period of time (book written in 1899 and movie in 1939). Besides the fact that it was an excellent movie, virtually everyone has seen it - so it is part of the vernacular - visually, musically and words. Also, it was the first color movie (tied w/ Gone with the Wind) probably has spawned the most versions of the Academy award winning song "Over the Rainbow."
It's timeless & it works for all generations.

Most impact would be Saving Private Ryan. This is the first war movie made that has had so many veterans saying how true to life it was. This is NOT on my personal favorite list though. I have never been able to get past the first 15 minutes.

There is no such movie. If you had asked "...for western society" or "....for North-American society" or "...for Middle-Eastern Society" one could have made suggestions. But, as the Billions of people around the world never saw the same movies (providing they ever got the chance to watch a movie), it would be pretentious to suggest that any one movie, presumably one made in Hollywood, would be IT.
Later: Perfect example. A person naming Wizard of Oz, suggesting that most people have seen it several times. NOT. Do you think that Western-Europeans or Indian or Russian or South-American society grew up with Wizard of Oz ?
I immigrated and when people ask me for the WORST movie I have ever watched, Wizard of Oz it is. I didn't grow up with it, it doesn't hold any 'magic' for me, the acting is pathetic, the message unclear, the costumes ridiculous, the set a joke. If I had grown up here, I might think differently.

The Power of One is a movie I think has the potential to create profound feelings of impact for oneself. It deals really well with the book of the same name by Bryce Courtenay. It tells the story of an English boy growing up during the era of Apartheid in South Africa and how he, himself, was a minority and second-class citizen. Good movie. Sir John Gielgud, Morgan Freeman, Stephen Dorf.

Wizard of Oz. It was a good quality movie for it's time and appeals to young and old alike. I bet most people have seen it several times. I cant even guess how many times I have. And after all these years, it's still very popular.

Casablanca has had the most impact on society with lines like "Play it, Sam.", "Here's looking at you, kid.", "We'll always have Paris", and many others. It's become part of our culture in a way that we don't even realize until you see the film (especially if one is an amateur film watcher).

There was a documentary movie in the 70's called Scared Straight. It dealt with what really goes on in prisons. I think it scared a lot of people to be law abiding in that era.
