typically you are given a bed, dresser, desk.
you should find out if the beds are regular twin size or extra long twin...
I suggest 2 sheet sets, a bedspread, a laundry bag or basket, a computer, talk to your roommate about a mini fridge and microwave (there is no need to have two), and talk to him/her about a phone as well.
I also suggest some sort of basket for your bathroom stuff if you living in a residence hall that has community style bathrooms. it makes it easy to carry.
I would say 4 towel/washcloth sets
an alarm clock, a flashlight (incase power goes out), a small tool set- like a mini screw driver.
poster putty for your posters on the walls- it seems to stick the best to cinder block walls.
I would also suggest a floor lamp or a desk lamp.
hope that helps!

Everything that everyone else said sounds great and good, but here are a few things that I did not realize when I first went into the great beyond. Most (not all) dorms make you go away over Christmas and Spring Break, and make you move out altogether over the summer. Only a few dorms may be open during the summer, and even some of those may make you move out between semesters even if you are going to stay there. Try and find out what the situation is, and try and figure out what you are going to do about summer and such. Trust me, you will pack in far more than you are going to want to be moving later on. The university that I went to had numerous different dorms, each with their own arrangement. Some were open every semester and did not require you to move out all of your stuff (but still made you leave between semesters). Perhaps you could find something like that. Until you know for sure, get all that you can (as in gifts, etc) but consider packing light. If you are getting a computer (pretty much a necessity) consider vying for one that has a DVD player and a TV input so that you don't have to pack in a separate TV.
Big, big issue (which made my life a living hell my first year). Set limits on your roommate regarding the use of your stuff and stick to them. Most people are great, but as I quickly found out some can be less than so.

,,,nothing great, that's for sure.. They provide (well, mine did.. Michigan State in E> Lans...) a desk, bed, mattress, a chair.. that's all I had. You need sheets of course. Take some cheap **** no one will rip off (hey, I answered your question about thievery in the dorms, lmao) liiiiike.. one of those 'colorful milk boxes' ya can stack. Hey, don't worry bout winning any prizes for the most 'tasteful dorm room' hon. (An exception to this is IF you are a snooty broad and want to join a sorority.. those bitches try and outdo each other. My advice is be down to earth and stay far clear from the sorority scene.) I'd take a good reading lamp, pillows, and hell IF it's allowed a hotplate is cool.. microwave/refrig. are awesome (but some dorms have big ones say at the end of the hallways.) SOMEtime your roomate is going to take a chance and leave the door open and guess what? This invites thievery and like I said in the other ??? of yours, the dorms are loaded with thieves!! I know.. I took **** from some ***** one time.. I hated her ***.. I'm not proud of it, but there it is... well.. later (Enjoy college.. best damn time of my life..) mel

Bedding - Lots of dorms have a longer than normal twin bed because of tall young men - that is a handy thing to know. A table of some sort if you are sharing a dorm room (which you usually do) to use between the beds.

Plenty of towels - just so you won't have to wash every other day. A change of sheets - so you can wash and have the bed made when you get back.

Don't forget your computer. and a nice fluffy rug - floors are cold in the winter.

Most dorm rooms provide a twin bed (sometimes a tad longer than a regular twin so be find out before hand from the school when you consider bringing/buying sheets), a desk, a chair and usually some type of chest of drawers. The space is usually small but you could consider talking to your potential roommate if you are going to have one and decide who'll bring the small refrigerator, stereo, TV. A good thing might be a bean bag chair or small comfy chair to hang out in. You have to provide the bedding ie:sheets, blankets, comforter, pillows. Other things to consider are a laundry bag or basket, small trash bucket, computer, games, a good dictionary, stuff to hang on your walls, a dry erase board for outside your door for messages, a cork board for inside your room, a calender. I bought a trunk and kept it at the end of my bed, don't forget to get a lock for it. Other things...hangers, towels, washcloth's, laundry soap, quarters to do the laundry. Try asking for some of this stuff for graduation presents it helps cut down on the cost. Stamps are good to for writing home. A good desk lamp and your enthusiasm. Hope this helped, have fun and good luck.
