It is very safe to drive in Mexico, and highway 15 is also a toll road so it is nicely maintained.

Take I-10 to Tucson, then I-19 to Nogales.
At the border, take Mexico 15 all the way down the coast.
Total mileage: 1280 miles.

You can go down Baja to La Paza - 1025 miles, and catch the ferry over to Mazatlan, but there are some real horror stories about the ferry. Plus Mex 15 is four-lane, and much of the road in Baja is not.
