in my apt. right over my bed and my mattress got wet all the way through . Wow. Huh? I have an air mattress. Does it take long for an apt. to repair a leak in a roof? I wondered why the ceiling above my bed was turning yellow . . . looked like cigarette smoke stain . . . but I don't smoke . . .thought what . . .I hope the maintenance guy doesn't have to come back a zillion times and doesn't take too long. I have two rabbits and I think they think I only have one. I don't want anyone to use this as an opportunity to charge me a second pet deposit. Like . . .Hey, . . we saw that you have TWO rabbits. Any chance I can make them buy me a new mattress . . .like cause of mold from being wet. Wet twice cause last time I just thought that rain BLEW in real hard and far when I had the screen and not the glass door. And I just waited for it to dry. Smelled funny . . .but thought it was my rabbits litter box ammonia . . .now think it was because it was mold from mattress.

They would have to fix the leak from outside if it is a roof leak. If it is from something else, like a pipe in the ceiling, they might have to rip out a part of the ceiling to get to it. Whoever comes to fix it is not likely to know about how many rabbits you are supposed to have, and at any rate, by the time the management gets around to fixing your problem you will probably have 20-30 rabbits anyway judging by the way those suckers breed.

Roof leaks can be a little tricky, especially if they are in a valley or hip. Sometimes the water Will follow a rafter down to a certain point, then drip onto the attic sub base. You should have renters' insurance to cover the damage. You may have a hard time convincing the super to replace the water damage. It may also work if he or she is a heck of a person.
Good Luck

Call your apt. manager right away for maintenance. That liability/policy should be clearly stated on the contract and they should take care of it soon. As for the moment--move your furniture and put plastic over the floor. Check with your neighbor to see if they know about this problem as well. You need to dry the area well and put buckets or other things to catch the water as well.

I think they should buy you a new mattress. The leak isn't your problem. Tell them your just baby sitting the second rabbit.

No chance of them paying for a new mattress. That is what renters insurance is for.

The landlord is usually required to keep your residence in habitable repair, but you do need to make sure he or she knows about the problem. It might be the landlord's fault if the roof was bad, but it could be your fault if it gets worse because you failed to act.
