Multiple reasons.
For starters, Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, such as sarin gas bombs, and mustard gas. He played games for years, and did not allow the weapons inspectors in to inspect as he agree, to do. Some countries did not want to use force, such as russia, and china, against Iraq, because it would jeopardize their oil contracts, that is why the U.N. did not vote for use of force.
Saddam has also given sanctuary and aid to terrorist organizations, including, but not limited to, Al Qaeda.
Saddam's regime also terrorized the people of Iraq. They were subject to torture, rapes, murders, for minor (sometimes nothing more than being of a different sect) reasons. Saddam's son was famous for going to weddings and raping the brides.
I'm sure you will get a few people to answer your question with the one word "oil". However they can not back that up with anything other than their 'feelings'.

It's about all of the below:
(1) The war in Iraq is a continuation of the Gulf War. It's a statement by the US that says "Those that defy us pay the price" (It was also widely believed that they were in no position to defend themselves)
(2) It's also a giant power struggle for control over the oil. It's not about getting the oil, the US can do that without going to war, it's about controlling it. Oil is power. And ultimate control of it is ultimate power.
(3) It's about establishing a foothold in the Middle East. The largest US Embassy in the world is now in Iraq and a continued prescence in the area will greatly enhance US power. It's also handy by creating a stepping stone into neighbouring Iran.
(4) It's about creating a dummy state - a fake democracy - one where the Iraqi people believe they are electing the government when the actual government is ruled over by US 'overseers'.
(5) It's about money - namely the 'rebuilding' of Iraq. Contracts have already been handed out to US companies worth billions.

Does your government and the media tell you that the war in Iraq is over???? It is definitely not! There is a guerrilla! A lot of people in Iraq doesn't like its present government, they are protesting and they keep on saying that Americans promised them freedom, but instead of that they are killing them every day! And you shouldn't forget that Americans helped Saddam to gain the politic power years ago...You are so terribly misinformed, you practically don't know what is going on...AT ALL...

What idiot said "freedom"?
It is over the fact that Saddam wanted to get OPEC to switch from the Dollar to the Euro as the currency in which oil is priced. This was a brilliant move on his part, since it would mean that the USA would have to actually PAY for what it currently takes from the world, with hard GOODS, instead of just printing more dollars to pay for it. In effect, it would have bankrupted the USA within a couple of years.

Sadaam ignored 17 UN resolutions because the french told him the UN would do nothing about his weapons. The french also told him that the USA would do nothinf--Wrong. The french were cutting very profitable oil deals with Sadaam, whileb Sadaam was ignoring the need of his people.
We are fighting Islamic fanatic maniacs, hell bent on killing us in Iraq, rather than our own backyards.

I think maybe Isreal is partly what it's over, amoung other things. Saddam didn't like Isreal much and threw a few missilses over there in the first Gulf war.

it doesn't seem like anyone knows... who knows where the WMD are... there are brutal dictatorships all over the world... and his links to terrorists are minimal by middle eastern standards...
basically... you could invade any middle eastern country, half of southeast Asia and half of Africa with these reasons... often with more links to terror and harsher dictatorships...
so what does Iraq have that those don't... oil... but I guess that's just a coincidence...
