What started the craze?

There was the Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Speed Racer generation which got EARLY fans into it.
Then there was the Akira generation that was introduced to anime in 1989-90.
Then there was the generation that gave birth to most anime fans. The Sailor Moon/DBZ generation(thank god for Toonami). I think that most of the teen and early 20's fans got their start here. You'll here alot of ppl say that they started with Speed Racer and Astro Boy when they were really little but most of them probably didnt know that they were watching a show from Japan.
And then finally theres the newest generation that started with Pokemon, Digimon, Card Captor Sakura, and Adult Swim. (sry to put Adult Swim in that group >.>) You can tell who they are because that group holds the most "TV anime fans."

Pick whichever you like but I personally think that the craze started to get big when Toonami started to air shows like Sailor Moon and DBZ.

I believe that there were a few comics and TV series with manga and anime characteristics for a long time but the anime series that really knock out America was Pokemon. Before that most people have no idea what anime was.

If your starting in real anime series and movies may I suggest AKIRA (movie) and Escaflowne (TV Series). These two are quite different from what you see in normal Stateside TV anime series because they are targeted to more mature viewers than Pokemon and sailor moon.

My guess would be the late 1960's early 1970's with Speed Racer and Battle of the Planets aka Gatchaman.

IMO, anime really took off in America with Sailor Moon. Once the powers that be saw kids were getting into Japanese cartoons, on came the onslaught of DBZ, Pokemon, Digimon, etc etc. I guess manga was a great way to have anime with you at all times w/o having to lug a tv set everywhere, no da!!

I don't know all the details..but thre is a legend I read about..during WW2 an American soldier watched an anime and brought it to America. He really wanted everyone to become into it ..I'm guessing he succeeded...^_^ (but, it's still a legend)
