This is gonna sound so gross, but my fave smell is skunk. I had a friend a while ago, and he told me a story about him moving from San Diego to Texas. Things didn't work out or whatever and he came back. When he was on the freeway he smelled skunk, and said to himself "Hmmm... smells like home". He died a few years after telling me this. San Diego is getting so big and populated that I barely smell skunk anymore, but when I do, I can't help but think that it smells like home :)

There are many, like smell of sweets, flowers, scents etc. but since you are asking me about a memory related to it, I will say the smell of soil when it is wet. It memorizes me of the rains, the cool breeze that flow when rain is falling. And the soothing touch of the raindrops and air.

Carnations, reminds me of simple easy times at my grandparent's shop. Those flowers are so easy to prepare- nothing like freakin roses... Whenever I smell carnations I remember hiding under the main work table with stolen cookies pilfered by my sister.
Definitely some very good times.

As human beings when were are in are embryonic stage those sensory areas that will become our frontal lobes and nose are in the center of the tiny blob of face... as we grow, those portions migrate to their final destinations... as such, our noses and frontal lobes of our brains ... a little bit about frontal lobes purpose is in the second reading... so, smells waif up to our noses which have been and are conveniently connected to our "behavioral" areas, and memories are provoked... we recall a person, place, feeling, sense, and 'relive it' for a moment...
Noses are replete with memory...
Below is a great little bit of reading called "The Smell Report"

Years ago I had a pet monkey. He was a member of our family. A man my mother knew was an alcoholic and put alcohol in his water tray. Monkey's love alcohol, so he drank it all in just a few minutes. By the time I found him he was having convulsions and near death. I watched him die with my own eyes...Every now and then....just once every 5 years or so - I get a whiff of exactly how he used to smell.... it makes me sad, but also I smile. I miss him still........

The morning dew.. maybe not my favorite but I adore the scent of being outside just at the verge of sunrise... It reminds me of my younger days of school.. when the only worries I had were... what to tell my homeroom teacher I did with my homework and/or why it wasn't done or finished... and just how was I going to get out of gym or why I was late coming back from lunch... Ahhh those days...

Wood that has recently been cut. It reminds me of my late father, a wood worker. He died when I was very little but when I smell that scent when someone has just sawed through a bit of lumber, the memories of him come rushing back to me.
