A network marketing business can be entirely worthwhile.
But beware: the general state of MLM is less-than-stellar, due to many unscrupulous and largely unregulated practices.
Anyone earnestly seeking to weed through the numerous scams to find the precious few worthwhile opportunities ~ that can facilitate true financial success ~ are not likely to find a way to conduct a balanced and thorough assessment of such on discussion boards like these.
For that kind of info, one must dig a bit deeper. The FTC can be a good place for info, but will only inform you of regulation (which changes regularly), and will not help you make a thorough business assessment.
I suggest the 'MLM ~ The Whole Truth' web site (linked below) as the best place to start. On it you will find a number of resources (some free) that will equip you to make an accurate assessment of the solidity of any potential (or current) opportunity.

MLM (multi-level marketing) and network marketing are really the same thing. But the industry separates them out because MLM is generally associated with scams.
Essentially, network marketing means getting others to sell your products and services for you. It works very well for some, Avon being a great example.
They profit because they use an outside sales force, which avoids having to pay salaries, are able to reach markets they might not otherwise be able to get to, and grow their customer base.

Danny,
Yes, and yes. But that in the end depends on you.
I work w/ an I-Commerce based Affiliate-marketing firm that operates through the Quixtar website.
I work damned hard, as I have business now in 7 states. In turn, I'm spending a lot of time driving....but the majority of it is done via mobile phone or PDA when it comes to the little things.
It really is a personal "high touch" company though. So when there are things that need done in person, I'm there serving a team in person.
Is it worth it? Yes, considering I no longer have to get up at the crack of dawn and deal with rush-hour traffic every morning.
I don't like the term, retired...as it spells misconceptions in the minds of those not there.
I like the term, financially independant....because all that means is....I haven't had to re-create the 70K + income I created 2 years ago.
So, do they work? Yes.
But that does depend on A- the actual company themselves, and B- your work ethic and ambition.
Now, when it comes to checking out a corporation....do the company, and yourself justice by checking out credible sources with a sense of due-dilligence.
Federal Trade Commission, Better Business Bureau, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and so forth.
Don't waste time with "negative websites" because that's all they're there for....the sake of ranting and spitting bile.
Good luck in your endeavors.
PS - something else I figured I'd give you to think about:
PDGAABPHTMMBTDK
(Please don't go as a broke person how to make money, because they don't know.) Make sure you know whom you're getting advice from...and whether you want what they have and how they live.

Yes and Yes if they have the right product or service at a fair price, which is not that common but it is done.
I mean think about this . . . if you sell a product and pay commissions on sales, you don't spend a penny on advertising until the sale is made. Now think about who pays for all those free CD's AOL sends out. If you said AOL, you don't know much about economics. YOU PAY my friend.

Yes...and yes. MLM is a method of growing business. It's like a vehicle to get you from start-up to financial freedom. It works if you work it.
