Let me first preface my remarks by saying I like the guy...Hope he's playing for one of "my" teams next year..."IF" he decides to play defense next year...
As to the all-star team, he ranks 7th in BA among full time AL outfielders...7th in SLG%....17th in OB%....and 71st in RF(among all OF) ...he is #1 in SB....
The one I don't get is the HUGE drop in the RF(range factor) this year...The thing that really had my attention on this guy was his ability to run balls down...his first 4 years his RF averaged right at 2.60(low-2.50, high-2.65)...He's gone from there down to 2.14 this year...I thought maybe he had a leg injury or something, but the 32 stolen bases pretty much erases that as an excuse...Maybe since it's a "free agent" season for him he thinks GM's are only going to look at offensive numbers...Probable a big mistake for Carl to make....Baseball front office people may be a little slow but they do pay some attention to defense...A 2.60RF is great, 2.14RF is just slightly above average for corner OF's...that's like giving up an additional 75 hits over 162 games....When you consider over 600AB, 18 hits is the difference between hitting .300(180H) and hitting .270(162H)...75 hits is big deal...
Crawford's offensive numbers have gotten better year by year...But, it has to make you wonder when his defense falls off like that just as it would if his BA fell over 100 points...I guess we'll find out if he's going to be one of the best "all around" OF in the game or just a slap and run guy...

Crawford's speed makes him one of the most exciting players in the game today. I think it is a shame he didn't make the team in lieu of Manny Ramirez, who can hit, but is not nearly as exciting. Too bad Crawford plays for the Devil Rays - put him on the Red Sox (PLEASE!!), and he makes it as an alternate at least.
