Since most artists worth their salt are playing a song that isn't precisely what's recorded, and singers will improvise and add or subtract, I'd imagine they wouldn't want a verbatim copy of the song playing in their ear. Plus, if the tempo isn't precise, or the intro goes on long, et cetera, they'll be horribly thrown off. If I recally correctly, the earpiece is actually what the mics are picking up, which lets the singer clearly hear their voice in the midst of everything going on around them.

It's usually an in-ear monitor. It's used to hear the band (or tape :P) playing over all the other surrounding noises.
They're a great way to keep up with the rest of the band, I think everyone should use them.

usually it's to hear a complete mix after all the processing. That way they can relay to the sound manager what to adjust. Did you ever notice the speakers at front stage facing the band? those are called monitors, they too are for "monitor"-ing the sound.

Yeah, it's to hear themselves and the band playing. Kelly Clarkson always takes hers out while she is singing and ends up relying on the speakers in front of her to hear what's going on and keep her pitch.

They're listening so that they can get their keys right. How can they listen to the lyrics while they're singing.....by the time they sang the wrong part it would be too late!

no. it's for hearing their music (melody and background) to keep their pitch and tone and beat (over the stage and crowd noise).
