Well after reading every-ones opinions I can only say one thing. The day I wake up and the headline in the newspaper reads, "Man Wipes Out Family After Smoking Joint", I'm going to break into his house and steal his ****, because that's some good ****. As far as the articles... bunch of BS. If it's so dangerous, why is it often prescribed to Cancer patients and many others? Just my opinion, but there's a lot worse thing's in the world that you could be doing.

The problem is that weed is the kind of substance that your body builds a tolerance to, so you need more and more to feel the effects every time you do it, until eventually it's a daily habit.

Also, it's quite common that once someone crosses the line and starts smoking pot, they are more wiling to try other more potent and harmful drugs -- especially if they are offered to you when your judgement is already impaired by drinking or getting high.

Frequent use drains your energy and motivation and common sense and bank account. Long term use has the same risks as cigarettes: one joint has as much tarry goo in it as a whole pack of cigarettes - it's called resin and it's very thick and gooey and really bad for your lungs. Long term use also is known for making people paranoid and has other alterations on brain function.

There's NO reason to start. If your so-called "friends" are pressuring you into doing something you know isn't right, then they're NOT true friends who care about you and want what's best for you and want to see you be happy and successful. You don't need to impress that bunch of clowns, and who cares what they say about you when you decide to walk away from them and hang with people who have self-respect instead.

Trust me, it will all be very clear to you in a few years, when some kids are going off to college and others are working dead-end jobs and partying all their paycheck away every weekend.

Keep in mind that no matter what your friends say, it's your body, period! If you are still growing, then your lungs won't benefit from having any type of smoke in them. Pot has three to five times the cancer causing carcenogenics that tobacco has, just most people who smoke pot don't smoke nearly as much as a tobacco smoker does, so you never hear of anyone getting lung cancer from smoking pot. There are no reported cases of lung cancer from pot, but that doesn't mean it won't happen, just like I said, not many people smoke 20 - 30 joints a day like they do cigarettes.
As to the mind altering effects of pot. Every plant is going to affect every person a little bit differently. Just like alcohol, your body will have it's own limits based on your weight and your tollerance levels, and the type of pot you are smoking. Some has very high levels of thc (the stuff that makes you high) and some has lower levels of thc. Some pot is canibus indica and some is canibus sativa, one makes you happy high and one makes you sort of sleepy high. One will make you giggle and want to eat every and anything, and one will make you passive and lazy. You can't tell which is which unless you see the actual plant, the leaves look different between the two strains, but you can deffinately tell which is which after you have smoked it.
As to pot being a "gateway" drug. This just isn't true. It does not lead to harder drugs, like an addictive habit that makes you need more and more stronger and stronger drugs. What it does do is put you in touch with an unsavory type of person that may also offer you other drugs to try. Since you might have enjoyed the pot, you will think, hey this other stuff might be fun too. That's where the "gateway" effect comes from, not from the pot itself, but from the way you have to buy it.
It is illegal you know, so before you make this choice, remember exactly what it is you are choosing to risk. Imagine what it would be like to have your parents have to come visit you in jail. Some fun things are not so fun once everything plays out. This is ultimately your choice and yours alone, but remember that nothing we do is in a vacume, and that it can very much affect other people in your life.

I work with a guy who did pot for years. I'm scared every day that he will end up getting severly hurt. Even though he's been off of it for about 4 years now, I think he definitely lost many many brain cells.

It's not that bad for you, if you don't mind permanent memory loss and lung disease. If you really want to know what the use of marijuana can do to you - just look at the state of California. Enough said.

Weed. no matter how little you use, is bad! In and of itself, it's not addicting, but eventually, you will want to move on to harder stuff.

Just don't do it. It will only cause you problems and make you think that it's ok to try other drugs. Don't, please, you'll regret it.
