On the left side of my left leg just a few inches below my knee, once and a while i get this sharp pain like someone's poking me. It doesn't occur very often, just once and a while, usually when i walk around. Do you know what might be causing it or how to stop it. Seeing a doctor is out of the question, because for years, all they doctors around her just give you a prescription and send you on your way.

could be a strained tendon or muscle...I would try resting it as much as possible or even elevation/ice to see if that helps with the pain.

As for doctors...your family practice MD could tell you if this is something that you would need to see an orthopedic specialist for or something that he can diagnose and treat in the office. if you don't want prescriptions - tell him so.

Before you attempt to see a chiropractor or massage therapist, please visit an orthopedist.

The pain you describe is precisely what I experienced for many years. The problem turned out to be in my ankles. They pronate or twist inwards. This makes the knee joints misalign causing an uneven wear on the cartilage.

The solution (for me) was to use orthodics. After wearing a pair for a few weeks the pain was almost completely gone.

I lived with the pain for years. I wish that I had gone to the doctor sooner.

Remember this when you visit any doctor, he is working for you. He has to listen to you and can't force you to do something that you don't want to do - such as take medication you don't need.

Good luck

A good licensed massage therapist or chiropractor/physiotherapist would be able to assess the leg and treat accordingly or refer you to someone who will.
