If you know the place (city and state) where your friend lived or the place where he died, try completing an online search for that place's newpaper. Most newspapers have an archive section on the online site. If not, try going to the newspaper office (or calling them if the place is far from your home) and see if you can obtain a copy of the obit.

Look in the archives of the city where he died and/or where he lived most of his life. Do you have the month of his death? Makes it easier to locate. Sorry about your friend.

Try contacting the local newspaper of the area he died in, and see if they can do a record search for you. It shouldn't be too difficult for them.
A Google check provided no results.

If you know what city he was living in, you can search the archives of the local paper.
