Because the liberals fight new construction of nuclear power plants. The liberals have successfully fought against hybrid power in cars for years because the results weren't what they wanted, only recently have the results yeilded results that the tree huggers finally accepted.

Simply because we are. During the 1970's the oil supply was tightened. All of a sudden it seemed the possibility of the worlds oil supply would run out or become to expensive.
So along can an alternative. Ethanol. Well it soon became available to everyone but because of the cost to create it was a bit more expensive. For awhile people began using that alternative.
But as soon as more oil became available and became cheaper there begin a slow decline in the use of ethanol. Had the right resources been put to bear there is little doubt that other sources could have been developed also and ethanol refined even more.
But we soon believed that the fault of the long lines belonged with the oil companies. All of a sudden there was more fuel available so seemed like it had been a ruse.
During that time more and more people moved to vehicles that were fuel efficient. Even though they were not as powerful as the big cars they seem to make sense.
Look around today when you are on the freeway. How many Small cars do you see. Not many.
Ethanol proved that an alternative fuel would not be profitable. You can't make it if people do not use it.

I am afraid I have to agree. At the moment, we are dependent on oil. But the problem is not with the president, but with those who control the oil companies. Simply put, we COULD develop alternatives to oil; Biodiesel already exists. So does alcohol, both from products we grow and even pay farmers not to grow. So why do we not see these on the market? Because the oil companies are not willing to spend the money on building refineries to handle the amounts of fuel grade alcohol and biodiesel for cars and trucks alone. So stop blaming some figure-head. Bush is a token, nothing more. No president can order big oil to do anything! It is congress that passes laws, not Bush.

We waste energy is the point. We use the oil to drive all over and to leave lights and fans on all day while we are at work. There are other ways to live and not send as much money to the Middle East. I heat my pool with solar panels and have saved a fortune doing that in the past 7 years. I am thinking about solar heating of the hot water in the house as a friend of mine has done. I bought the energy efficient bulbs and my electric bill went down 15%. If you have read any of the news magazines lately, they are talking about the new biofuels. They are talking about building more nuclear power plants to provide electricity. People can also use public transportation. I am also cutting down on my driving. I live 1.2 miles from the drug store and I walk there now. I get my groceries on the way home from work instead of making a separate trip. several of my neighbors and I pick up things for each other at the supermarket or home depot. We call and ask if they need anything before we go. Recycling also saves on oil because it uses less fuel to use recycled material than to make it from scratch. Plastic is made from oil so when we recycle plastic bottles, bags and styrofoam (some supermarkets recycle the bags and the styrofoam) we are using less oil to make more bags and bottles. It takes less energy to melt glass and cans than to make them from scratch. It's all about changing behavior.

First he said we are addicted to foreign oil. And we have plenty of oil reserves is many locations in our country, the tree huggers will simply not let us tap it. We need to use our own oil reserves and NOT be so dependant on foreign oil.
I personally would love to see us not use oil anymore, I do not care in the least about the tree hugger motives, but if we could figure out a way not to fund all those damed towelheads in the Middle East, it would be a greater blow then any military action.\
To philbertphei...
You are completely wrong with your point that we can't get other sources because we spend to much money on oil. In fact it is the exact opposite. Oil is SO amazingly cheap, gasoline is insanely cheap, that there is simply no profit to be made investigating other energy sources.

Over the years other fuels have tried to come up. But normally big oil companies buy the patents to them and burry them away in some dark room never to be seen again.
This ensured that oil companies got to stay no. 1 and keep the revenue.
Well you see where that greed has gotten us...the results are showing today and will only get worse until we start coming up with other methods of transportation or fuel.

Bush is smart...we are addicted to oil. There ARE other forms of energy we could use, but we just don't currently have the capacity or infrastructure to change over to Ethanol or other forms...YET. We'll get there. Saying Bush is an idiot just proves a point...that point being you don't know much about the issue at hand. Name calling is one of the first signs of ignorance.

Well, we could use ethanol or use an electric car or develop a type of vehicle that ran on another type of energy such as hydrogen. I think he means that since oil has been so cheap and easy to use as fuel, there hasn't been much of a reason to search for a way out.

We are addicted to oil.
We do have other choices: ethanol, nuclear power, hydrogen.
The sooner we choose alternatives, the sooner we can be done with the radical Islamo-Fascists in the middle east who have us by the balls because they sit on the oil. When we do that, we can watch these radical muslims kill themselves and decide who Allah loves best. And then no more U.S. soldiers have to put their neck on the line for democratic suburban soccer moms driving their oversized SUV's, bitching about the gas prices they have to pay driving "Tyler" and "Paris" to practice!!!

There are plenty of other energy sources, we just don't have the money to develop them because we're spending so much on oil.
Solar, wind, fuel cells, batteries, ethanol etc.
