So your zip code can be entered into a data base so the store knows what parts of town their cutomers are coming from.
They can then compare these numbers to what they spent on each market in advertising, flyers, ad's, etc. They then uses these stats to send out new advertising items.

First of all, you don't have to give it.
The store is implementing segment marketing; a business tactic to target their customers. Once they determine which neighborhoods are frequently visiting their stores, they will send diret mailers to that area. Hence, junk mail addressed to "Current Resident" at your address. Think Bed, Bath & Beyond.
People living in the same neighborhoods tend to have similar lifestyles, proving the old adage that "birds of a feather flock together" still holds true. To a large extent, you are where you live!

One reason is so they can enter it into the card terminal as part of the authorization request to your credit/debit card company. Your financial institution can then electronically let the merchant know if it is a match. It increases security and, at least in theory, helps reduce card fraud.
Another reason is to gather demographic info on customers.

Its part of a secret government tracking program. Just another way to know who you are and where you shop and what you buy. The cameras in the store match your face to a government database as you check out and the govt. compiles all this info about you. Just kidding...I hope.

I recently went to a Nike outlet and they asked me for mine. They said they were doing a survey to see where their customers come from. This cashier was probably doing the same thing.

They can target their products and advertisements more efficiently if they have an idea of where people are coming from. It may pay to continue a particular advertising campaign it an area if sales from that area are high, or advertise more aggressively in areas where sales are low...
