I know there's an opera called "Dido and Aeneas" by Purcell, and I'm assuming it's a Greek myth (just because it sounds like one), but I can't understand what they are singing on the CD, and I want to know the story. Can anyone shed any light on the plot? I'd appreciate it.

Aeneas and his crew were shipwrecked in Carthage, and Dido (who was queen) took them in. She fell in love with Aeneas, but she had been married before, and her husband Sychaeus had been murdered by her greedy brother Pygmalion. She swore an oath that she'd never love another man, and she couldn't be with Aeneas because of that oath. However, aphrodite played a trick on them and made it rain when they were on a hunt, and they had ti find refuge in the same cave and somehow that meant they were married. the rumor about love-struck Dido spread to the neighboring kingdom, whose king (a son of Zeus) had been rejected by dido. he prayed to zeus that Aeneas and Dido's tryst end, and zeus sent hermes to remind Aeneas of his destiny in founding rome. So he left, albeit unhappily, and Dido committed suicide.

It is based on a story from the fourth book of Virgil's Aeneid, of the legendary Queen of Carthage Dido and the Trojan refugee Aeneas. When Aeneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love. However, Aeneas must soon leave to found Rome. Dido cannot live without him and awaits death.
