Make sure the baby has her mouth wide open and her tongue out to have proper suck. (Try rubbing her mouth gently to get her to prepare) Help her insert as much as you can, and be patient with her. Dont give up too soon and go for a bottle, as that will make it harder for her to breastfeed. Also, call the hospital and speak with a nursing consultant, or contact La Lache League (phone book or internet search). Frequently, they will send someone to your house to help you, if you'd like.

She is a little on the small side. If your milk doesn't let out real good it may be too much work for her and she may be getting tired. Give her lots of support. Hold her head right up to your breast so all she has to do is suck and squeeze your nipple until milk comes out before putting her mouth to it.

If she doesn't latch start pumping so you have a bottle back up or buy some fortified (22 cal) formula. She may need some extra calories if she doesn't start eating well. If your pumping you can fortify your breastmilk and give her that. Get the smallest softess nipple you can with a natural shape and see if she takes the bottle better. I know breast feeding is good for your baby but what's most important is that she gets your milk so do what you have to do to get it in there. When she gets a little bigger she'll get good at this.

The size of your nipples has nothing to do with staying latched. Baby need to learn to feed, like we learn anything in the world. They have to be taught. your nipple should be all the way in the babies mouth the nipple not the areola. make sure that the baby grabs it and pull her in, than watch to see if she is on, by looking at the way her mouth moves it should draw back for a long hard suck and again then rest for a sec and so on if she is sucking fast than she is probably not getting anything you will be able to feel the let down (milk coming down the ducts) this happens when your milk really comes in around the 2-3rd day after birth for first time moms. Your milk will be really yellow at first than it will be white with a bluish tint!! weird but bluish is good. Your babys should feed on demand or at least every 3 hours at first until she gets a routine. remember to start on teh side you eft off at. this will prevent engorgment. Try to pump inbetween feedings if it feels like she may not be getting enough or taking a lot. it will help your supply and feel much nicer. good luck hunny

Hey Sweetie! I nursed all five of my babies. Let me see if I can help. While holding your baby with one arm, take the other hand and squeeze your breast with your thumb and forefinger slightly and gently press your nipple on the babies cheek. Babies have a natural reflex and will turn their heads towards the breast when stroked. Now gently put your nipple into the babies mouth. This should work. If you continue having trouble getting your baby to nurse you can call the La Leche League and they will send someone to your home to help you I think for no charge. Or if you have a friend that has breastfed, just ask her. I'm sure that she would be glad to help. Don't be shy, really, we all feel unsure about things with our first babies. Don't worry everything will all workout and you'll be a wonderful mommy :)

You are right...this baby should be able to "latch" on and just dangle from your nipples at this age.

Ask your Dr. Do you really expect to get this type of help from a bunch of strangers on the computer?
