First, I believe you mean defamation of character.

Second, Defamation, sometimes called "defamation of character", is spoken or written words that falsely and negatively reflect on a living person's reputation.

If a person or the news media says or writes something about you that is understood to lower your reputation, or that keeps people from associating with you, defamation has occurred. Slander and libel are two forms of defamation.

As to whether or not it is a crime, the short answer is yes but you have to be able to prove it and you have to be able to prove it is being don maliciously with intent to harm you or your character. Best advive in the short run is to calmly talk to the person about it and to start documenting wht YOU YOURSELF hear.
Documenting what someone else said they said is hearsay will do you no good.

You can file a lawsuit in civil court for defamation of character. The hard part is proving it. What hard facts and proof do you have that this is happening. Remember, hearsay is not admissable in a court of law. I would start documenting things in writing and try to develop a way to document this. Managment should not be listening to idle gossip so you could go to your human resource department to see if they can help you.

No having a deformed character is not illegal. :D Sorry, couldn't help myself.

There is a huge difference between defamation of character and free speech. You can say whatever you want all day long as long as it is doesn't injury another person falsely.

Actually, if he is stating lies, and you are being passed over for promotions due to this, it becomes slander as well. If you can actually prove that what he is stating are lies, then you will have a case. If they are his "opinions" of you, then there's no case.

Go see a lawyer - they will be able to assist you with this.

It is a civil crime and if your management is allowing and encouraging it then you have grounds to file a workplace harrasment suit. I forget the group that officially handles this but you could try the ACLU.

You have to be able to prove damages to win a case like this. In other words, you have to show that it cost you a promotion or you lost money because of false statements about you -- very hard to prove.

Slander is spoken. Libel is written. BOTH are defamation of character. TRUTH is a complete defense to these charges in the US.

i think you can bring civil charges against him. You will probably need a good lawyer and stuff! I think its stupid that defamation of character is a crime, its called freedom of speech!

Hard to prove. If management is that weak, find a new job.
