Does anyone know of any good history novels that take place in the civil war era (or around that time). I'm looking for something written in narrative format and thats not 'too deep'. I recently read Manhunt by James L. Swanson and really enjoyed it. Thanks a lot

Eugenia Price has a series of books, historical fiction, written about the South starting around 1810 and going through the civil war. They are very good, I remember reading them in high school and loving them.

Gone With The Wind is another good historical novel. And if you want a book from the Northern perspective, Little Women is set during that time...although you won't get the attention to detail that Margaret Mitchell provides on the war itself.

If you are interested in anyway in nonfiction--YA nonfiction so it's easier to read--there are two good books I can recommend.
Good Brother, Bad Brother by James Cross Giblin is a biography of the Wilkes brothers--it focuses on the "good" brother Edwin who had to learn to cope with negative attention brought on the family by his brother who of course shot Lincoln.
And Photo by Brady: A Picture of the Civil War uses photographs to tell the story of the war and a bit about those who took so much trouble to document it with photographs.

If you can find it, try The Horse Soldiers by Harold Sinclair. It is a novel based on the actual Civil War event known as Grierson's raid. It was the basis of a movie starring John Wayne & William Holden; the book is so far superior to the movie that it makes one wonder why they just didn't film the book as written.

W.E.B. Griffin has written some fairly reliable "historic fiction" novels that deal frequently with the military. a competent series to apply may be his Brotherhood of conflict series. The series follows a solid of characters from WWII by using the Vietnam conflict, and is reliable interpreting regardless; although, each and every e book ought to face on my own even as comparing the historic accuracy of the history events. I checked many of the documents out as i changed into interpreting the series for the first time, and many it changed into traditionally precise, albeit "artistically decorated" for leisure cost.

"Across Five Aprils" covers the time period of the war. Tells the story of the war from one family's perspective. A good book, suggested by many young adult reading lists

Have you read "Killer Angels" by Shaara--it's what they based the movie "Gettysburg" from. Also "Team of Rivals" about Lincoln's Cabinet (thought it's nonfiction).

And you have to read Little Women, which is also about that time, from a feminine perspective.

Andersonville by McKinley Kantor is about a confederate prison. Sounds dull but it was a great read.

Oldie but goodie. Stick with the classic, "Gone With The Wind."

The only one I know of it The Red Badge of Courage, but I really didn't like it. It's a classic, so someone must have liked it. Maybe you will. But I thought it was loony.
