Of course! If anyone is older than they are or is saying something they don't like ... they can tune you out and you feel like you are talking to the walls.
The thing is, you have to keep doing it. No matter how they act, someof it gets through and sticks.
My eyes glazed over whenever my Mom would start to lecture me but I always heard what she said in my heart.
The thing you have to remember is that any of the BAD stuff you say gets to them in the same way. You have to punctuate the lecturing with telling them how much you love them and let them know you'll never give up on trying to be a good influence on them.
Hang in there.

I'm not a parent, but anyone over, 35 years old, just vanish, into the back ground with them.
Gee, when I was a teenager, I was soo very attentive to my mom and dad, and all those adults giving me all that great advice.
Think back Mom, did you truly, listen to all your Mom and Dad said to you?
I bet Adam and Eve, had the same problem with their two sons, seems they were always argueing with each other. And we know how that turned out.
And guess what, they couldn't blame that on peer pressure.
So just enjoy your invisiblity, not to make a pun, but that will disappear, when they get out of their teens.

Yes I do, I have a 12 year old son and it seems like his mind wonders everytime I asked him about school and friends.

I'm sure a lot a parents fell that way, but at least you are talking to them. Weekly family meetings during dinner should help in getting their attention. Please don't stop. You'll be glad you didn't.

from the teenager's point of view:
'her lips are moving, but i love the song that just came on my headphones'
its true. most of the time i don't see the lips moving, & they don't see my headphones, so all i know is green day!

You think they are not listening, but they are. Don't nag, but don't hesitate to talk about things that are important. Your messages will get in there.
