RE:
Is a cotton mouth snake the same thing as a water moccasin?

yes... they are the same species... but there are sub-species with different coloration. while a water moccasin can have a diamond patterned back and vary from shades of brown to black, a cotton mouth is strictly dark black thus creating the contrasting effect of a open striking mouth that appears like "cotton" compared to the darkness of the rest of its body.

yes they are the same snake. water moccassins are called "cotton mouth" due to the fact that when they are threatened by somethign wayyy bigger than themselves such as a bear. they will lay down on the ground and open thier mouth which looks all puffy white like a cotton ball stuffed in thier mouth, making it seem like they are dead, and in many cases an animal will just leave it alone.

Yep. They're the same. The inside of the mouth is white -- like cotton. But trust me: You don't want to look. This is one bad snake.

Yes it's the same. Some confuse the copperhead with these though, but it is a totaly diferrent poisonous snake, several shades of copper, or some have some violet bands.
