It helps if you're really passionate about your product and truly believe that it can help your client accomplish what they are looking to do. A top salesman does not burn bridges, knows how to build networks of contacts, is not afraid to ask for referrals, is an authority on his product, and does not waste time. Budgeting your time is very important. I knew a girl who wanted to be a top saleswomen so she worked 60 hour weeks and did anything she could do to move cars out the door. However, she was too willing to bend over backwards, and she came from a mentality that she had little to offer the customer and the customer had everything to offer her. At the end of the month, she would only pull in 4500-5000 dollars, which IMHO is not worth if for the time she worked, the ammount of BS she put up w/ from her clients, and the number of cars she sold. It can help preserve your bottom line in the end if you show you're willing to walk as a salesman. It shows the customer you're not desperate.

If you're somewhat new to sales, I'd recomend listening to some Tony Robbins or Zig Zigglar, as I find their energy cantagious and a lot of what they say useful. Good luck.

Believe in your product so you are not apprehensive to talk to people about it. Don't prejudge customers. Even if they don't look like they could finance their way out of a paper bag, you just don't know what kind of money people have and taking just the "nice looking people" can bite you in the ***. Be sincere, don't make empty promises, be HONEST and thank them for the business and ask them for referrals.
