I am in the same situation as far as dating and also use a wheelchair. It took a long time to try and figure some things out. Try locating some works by Irving K. Zola. He is a renowned figure in disability studies. We all as human beings are 'temporarily able bodied', meaning someday we will for the most part need some sort of assistance in life. This idea scares many of people. Perhaps we as people who use assistive devices such as wheelchairs remind society of what awaits them. Another thing to consider is everyone in the world has an impairment whether it be poor eyesight to crooked teeth to being unable to walk. For the most part these impairments are socially accepted b/c they don't impede day to day activities, are easily corrected and therefore not 'disabling'. For instance for those with poor eyesight they can easily obtain a pair of glasses and those with crooked teeth obtain braces. For those who use wheelchairs, we can also obtain the proper adaptive equipment, but we also look toward society to help out with our mobilization such as curb cuts, accessible transportation and such. Unfortunately society has yet to fully comprehend and tackle the issues at hand that people who use wheelchairs face on a day to day basis. People without these 'disabling' impairments see this. They also the struggle that people who experience these 'disabling' impairments endure in their day to day lives. As a result people have been conditioned through the years to believe that b/c people who use wheelchairs might need help getting from point A to point B they also must need to help in everything else that they do including in the bedroom. Little do they know what they are missing ;) One piece of advice that I have found very helpful when it comes to dating is although the "curse" of using a wheelchair is ingrained in our culture, try looking at it as a "blessing" as well. By blessing I mean more often than not you will learn about an individuals shallowness very early into a relationship. In my experience it is the first date. It is much easier to find out early that the relationship is not going to work than months or years down the road, which happens much more often to those who don't experience 'disabling' impairments. When the right guy comes around, it will be much easier to know b/c he will be interested in you as a person, not as you 'in a wheelchair'.

I'm sure there are many girls who have dates with men in wheelchairs.....if they are mature they accept the person for what he is ......his mind and spirit.....sometimes it takes a girl a while to get to know him.....just because he is confined to the the wheelchair he is still capable of doing many things...look at the men who play sports in wheelchairs and get out on the road and compete with other people in wheelchairs racing. There are many stories about couples who have health issues. If the person in the wheelchair has a smile and a positive attitude then those features will attract many people to him or her. Every person has something that is not right with them...wheelchair or not in a wheelchair. No one is perfect.

There are some girls who marry men who are in wheelchairs. Just because they are in a wheelchair does not mean that they are invalids, it just means they can not feel their lower half.
It all comes down to personality. Some girls can not seem to get past the wheelchair and so, they ignore the guy. that would make some of these said women shallow and vain.

could be the same reason men do not date fat chicks.
It's just not in the natural selection of humans to want an impaired indiviual that may not fufill their needs.
Personally I knew one guy who used a wheelchair/ crutches and he was amazing! He was not only sweet and witty, but he was also very strong, and made VERY good money. He was funny and adorable, and although not facially the 'cutest', all of his attributes made him so kissable! He was really my sister's friend, but I still think so much of him.
