I took my truck to a local auto store where they used their machine to read the check engine light. The guy said there were no stored codes. What else would cause this light to come on and stay on? Is this just a "reminder" to go in and see my Chevy dealer? How do I get this thing turned off?

You have a bad ground somewhere on your car, probably better take it to the garage or take the bulb out if you can even reach it.

usually when the light is on it stores a code, what year chevy, could be water in the gas tripping the o2 sensor, might try another auto parts store to try and pull the codes,on the older ones u could clear them by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, some vehicles have a lock out code on the radio, if u disconect the battery the radio wont work, need more info on vehicle what year, and model ,car or truck.

if it is a 1997 or above put key in the ignition, turn but don't start vechile, press gas pedal three times within 5 seconds and this should reset your computer.. check engine should flash multiple times before resetting.. if this does not work repeat trying 4 times in five seconds.. if below 1997 disconnect positive side of battery for 20 minutes.. this should reset the computer... if check engine light still stays on then there is a problem take it to a mechanic!!!

There is a code stored, it could be that the local auto store clerk (who if he was a qualified mechanic would not likely be working there) did not have the equipment or knowledge to read it correctly.

Take the truck to a qualified mechanic, and pay to have them do a diagnostic test on it!

well i would run it and whem the light goes on take it directly to the shop and dont shut off the engine because it will go into default mode and lose the code , and if its not that simple try the o2 sensorers sometimes they will read and make your lihjt come on if they are bad (they are on the exhaust sytem 1 before the cataletic converter and one after the cat

If the light is on... there is a code. Take it to a real mechanic or the dealer to run a good diagnostic.

My light has been on for as long as i have had my car, I check it every few months, but nothing ever comes up. Check if every so often just be sure. I've had my car for a year and a half.

The last time this happened to me I had a cracked engine block. You'd best get it checked out at real mechanics.

This happened to me once on my Chevy Cavalier
It was because the gas cap wasn't closed all the way
