Many sports like soccer existed throughout the world, however much of what we know as soccer started in England in the 19th century as I recall from reading throughout my life. England spread its sports to its colonies, and there were many colonies remaining in the 19th century. Soccer also gained popularity in Europe around this time.
It is a simple game-one merely needs a ball and some markings for goals and certain lines, this makes it accessible.
What really makes it so popular however seems to be the connections it has made with local cultures and causes. Unlike sports in America, soccer seems to have taken root in the areas where it is popular and teams have come to represent causes.
In comparison to American sports as well, soccer has spread much more because it has had contact with more causes. Baseball and basketball are gaining popularity in the world for this reason-more people know about in different locations than did in the past.

Soccer is a simple game that really in it's essence only requires you and a circular object or ball. It is played even in 3rd world countries with little resources and equipment and is easily accesible to the poor, which make up a majority of the world. Pele always told a story in videos about playing a game in the streets of Brazil as a child, with a bundled up rag of tattered clothes or an orange. It is the equivalent of basketball in the U.S, any inner city youth with a ball can play, even by themselves.

I hate most sports, particularly the sports such as soccer and rugby (thugby as a friend of mine puts it), those such games are for morons running around on the field with a ball, tackling each other, getting all sweaty and wasting the few brain cells they might have had by tackling and hurting each other!

Because soccer is like sex. You have a huge buildup before a big release when you finally score. And when you do score, you still want more.
