What do you think of people who spend thousands of dollars to concive a child when their are so many children already here waiting to be adopted? I would like to hear from everyone but especially people who are against abotion and are always listing adoption as the solution.

I think they are irresponsible, selfish, and immature. I believe 100% in abortion, by the way.

It's only natural to want children of your own.

Let's keep terms straight. The people who spend thousands on treatments are getting IVF (in-vitro fertilization) where an egg and sperm are mixed and then inserted in the woman's body. 99% of the time, it is the couple's own child. (Sometimes it's donated sperm or eggs, because one is infertile).

Artificial insemination is the insertion of sperm from a donor when the woman is fertile (think David Crosbie and a turkey baster). The mother is having her own child, and usually the donor - if done through a doctor - is anonymous but chosen to look similar to the husband. This is actually a cheap procedure, and can even be done at home.

As for adoption - that's a myth. I guess it's an interesting question whether it's racist to want a child who looks like you?

There are millions or rich middle class couples wanting to adopt. Guess what? Most of them are white. There really aren't that many healthy babies up for adoption, and few of them are white.

This isn't the 1950's when most middle-class teenage girls who got pregnant were forced by their parents to put the child up for adoption. In those days, there was an endless supply of healthy (white) problem-free children to be adopted. Today, those mothers and grandparents keep those children.

Most adoptees today come from poor homes, or from mothers with dependency problems so severe they have to give up their child. Babies born to alcoholic or drug-addicted mothers have problems that follow them through their life. Guess what? 50% of America's poor are non-white. Worse yet, some mothers still try to raise those kids until things get so bad, child and family services has to take the kid away; if they're not newborn, they may have malnuutrition and abuse problems. (It's not a race thing, it's a poverty and neglect issue - black, white, Latino, and native American).

And to make matters worse, where there's a shortage there's someone making a buck. There are private adoption agencies that will find expectant mothers who will have healthy newborns and arrange adoptions for a good fee; so even fewer "normal" children make it to the regular adoption lists.

It's a sad world all around. No wonder people prefer their own children.

Oh boy I have some 2 cents on this topic. But since there isn't enough time in the world for that, I'll just give you 1/2 a cent...

There are so many children out there that need homes, why create new flesh? Take care of the things that are, before starting something new.
For example. If some one bought you a turkey, you let it sit out and get all sorts of germs. Then made your self a sandwich and ate that. Wouldn't that be stupid.

I know that wasn't the best annlogy ever. Let me explain if you don't get it. The turkey is a child who needs adopted. And the sandwich is the child you're making. I know it doesn't make sence.

A better exsample for the people who love animales. I would rather adopt a dog from a shelter than buy one from a breeder. Knowing you saved that animales life... Just something special.
But then thats me.

Some people jsut want to have their own children. There really is nothing wrong with it. A lot of people are also scared of adopting because the courts always seem to side with the birth mother when she decides several months down the road that she wants to have her child back. It can also be hard to find out a child's medical history because so many women and young girls that put their child up for adoption have no idea who the father is.

It's all about looking at a child you created, someone who is a little bit of you and the person you are with. I'm against abortion, and I'm totally for adoption. If I wasn't able to have kids I would try to get pregnant with fertility treatments and if that didn't work I would LOVE to adopt. It's not that I wouldn't want that child, and I wouldn't love him or her any less, but it's the dream of seeing your very own child grow up...

For instance, I can't wait to see what my children end up looking like, what personality traits they carry, etc. It's something I've always looked forward to...that doesn't make me a bad person. It just means I have my own dreams, so they maybe different than someone else's.

I personally feel it's their choice. I plan on adopting, but I also plan on having 1 more child of my own first. I already have 2 children. If a man and woman want a child to carry their own genes, that's their choice. The big thing is, it's VERY hard to adopt an infant. Most people want to raise a child from the time it is a newborn.

I would prefer to see people adopt, but I absolutely cannot judge them for choosing another path. I do worry, however, about the prevalence of sperm banks. I'm not sure what the repercussions will be in the future. With adoption, there is less chance that your child will have dozens of other biological siblings around that he or she knows nothing about and may be attracted to in adulthood. Also, with adoption, there was at least some sort of emotion involved in conception, even if it was foolish, but with sperm donations, it just seems so cold and superficial. I think it's kind of creepy and I don't know that I would want the father of my child to be someone who could donate sperm anonymously to a place like that.

I would personally want to adopt a child if I couldn't have my own child naturally. I realize there are tons of children out there for people to adopt. You just have to look. Also adoption can cost just as much as artificial insemination, so it's a toss up for some people.

I think adoption is a wonderful solution. President Clinton has done two things while he was president to make domestic adoption easier.

1. Created a clearinghouse for all states to list available children

http://www.adoptuskids.org

2. Created a $10,000 tax credit (not deduction but an actual off the bottom credit) for adoption per child that covers most if not all of the cost of a domestic adoption.

because they want their own flesh and blood and in light of some of these adopted kids growing up and killing their adopted parents can be scary. adoption would only be a last resort and the child would have to be an infant. thats just the way i feel...

The adoption process also costs lots of money. Hire Doctors, instead of Lawyers.
