We're looking because of hubris. We think we epitomize "intelligence", as if we are the ultimate and no higher form of consciousness than our own can exist, with the possible exception of the "God" we believe in. So we're looking for other-worldly creatures who are pretty much exactly at our level. How silly! I'm sure plants and ants are also unaware of intelligence levels higher than their own -- they may be able to sense dogs and crows and people, but they lack the intelligence to recognize that these possess higher forms of intelligence (and by 'higher', I mean higher than their own). WE MAY BE SUBJECT TO THE SAME BLIND SPOT, W/ RESPECT TO BEINGS WITH INTELLIGENCE LEVELS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER THAN OUR OWN!!! They could be right in front of our eyes and noses, but are we smart enough to recognize them as such???!

To distract the scientists from the terrestrial government's secret technology and energy sources. (As long as we think antigravity, spaceships, and cheap energy are 'alien', we will keep buying oil and making a few people VERY rich.)
It's all part of the plan. Has been since Relativity became popular.

That's probably the stupidest question I've heard all day. You're just rehashing some old joke. We can all tell you're not very bright, but give the rest of us some credit.

Based upon you question, I'd say you're right.
I guess they need something to spend the space budget on.

I dont think we will but it gives scientists something to do and maybe other important discoveries can be made in that process.
