There are many places to get this information on the internet.

First, please consider using a tie dye kit. I've never had consistent luck just using rit dye to tie dye. You can get a kit from Dharma trading, or one sold at hobby lobby/joanns.

To tie the shirt is not terribly difficult - for a regular spiral, you mark where you want the spiral to start, the pinch the fabric there, making sure both layers are together. Once the shirt gets too big to hold with a pinch, place a flattened palm against your work and continue twisting the shirt around this. Rubber band it with 4 bands to hold it in place, forming pie wedges around the design. You can use the wedges for color designing after you have soaked your shirt in a soda ash solution for 15 minutes. Squirt the dye into the wedges (front and back). Allow it to soak for 24 hours, then rinse it out.

After you've mastered the basic shirt, you are only limited in how you fold it as to the patterns that come out.

Good luck.

there's several methods of making tie dye. i'll outline the ones i know:
bullseye: place 2 fingers in the dead center of the shirt and make a cone. place rubber bands at close (2"-3") intervals.

rings: make small cones (about the length of your fingers) at various places and rubber band at each spot.

random: crunch the shirt up into a ball like you would a piece of paper. criss cross rubber bands in several different directions to hold it together. you should probably use bigger rubber bands for this one. you can use a few 'ring' techniques for any spots that may be sticking out. adds to the randomness

swirl: this is the toughest one for me. place the shirt on a flat surface and place one hand in the middle with all five fingers touching the shirt. twist the shirt in one direction. with your other hand guide the outside of the shirt so it packs neatly into a tight swirl. if you do it right it should look like a cinnamon roll with several 'circles'. carefully place rubber bands in an 'x' to hold it together.

there's probably a lot more than this but i had great results with elementary age students with these 4.

Lol...this takes me back to the early 70's! When we tie dyed, we took a t-shirt, put rubber bands tightly around gathered pieces of the fabric in several places (hence "tie dyed") then we put the shirt in die. I don't know of a website, must be one some old hippie from the "flower power" age group though I am sure! There are books out there, try the library if you can't find a website. And hey...peace and love! : )
