It is quite common for isps to set every so many hours to disconnect people since some people leave them on all the time. On broadband it does not matter, but on dial up, you actually have a modem at the other end so they try and keep costs for equipment down.
Be glad this is 2006. In the OLD days, AOL and other carriers would disconnect you every 10 or 15 minutes and when you would try and reconnect you would get a busy signal.

I easily have that problem at artwork with the dial up connect and outlook besides. i have been on the phone with at&t countless circumstances to detect a reason behind the disconnect and they insist there is not any problem. Sorry i haven't got an answer and curiously neither does at&t!

It depends on whats going on in your house, something must be happening everythree hours that disconnects your service...and no its not supposed to happen.
Might I suggest you move to DSL?
If you look in the right places and say the right things you might be able to get it for as cheap as $10-$20

Some isps disconnect automatically. Usually this happens if you remain idle (are not using the computer) for a specific amount of time. Netzero used to disconnect me, thankfully I have broadband now.

I used to have dial-up, and that sort of thing happened all the time. It could be spyware doing that, or something else.
You should switch to high-speed. You will love it, and you will never want to go back to dial-up.
