For the same reason they don't make wax cylinders or 78 rpm records. New technologies push out the old. CDs are much more durable, much harder to scratch, and much easier to transport, and that's why they've taken over. If it hadn't been for "scratching", vinyl records might have completely disappeared.

As to the next format, no way to tell. Some were touting DAT (Digital Audio Tape) as the next big thing, others Minidiscs. With the explosion of digital music and players, there may not be any future "hard" format, although I don't see the record companies giving up on something they can actually sell for some time.

wrong wrong wrong

Simply put - demand.

the debate will rage for several years I assume, but my two cents is that Vinyl offers superior sound to CD. Analog factually captures more sound than a digital file does... but the answer to why record companies won't produce it is simply because CD outsells.

HOWEVER - many many distributors DO still manufacture vinyl as well as the occassional promo from major labels. Still quite popular with DJ's and serious music collectors.

... and turntables are READILY available eBay, Walmart, radio Shack, Sears, Best Buy, Guitar Center, etc etc)

Well, the world moves with technology so

Its like asking why floppy discs aren't being used anymore, they didn't hold a lot of info

CD's hold more info/music at a BETTER quality...and at this point, they're cheaper then the old vinyls to produce

The material used to make records was once said to be obsolete...I believe this and advanced technology was the end of the era for them...not enough demand.
But, you can still buy bunches of them off of eBay...good luck.

Basically there's little if any market for them since CDs took off.
