~~if you have a PetSmart in your area, they usually have cats and dogs up for adoption... also another place to go look is at your local vet's office... they will usually have a bullitin board where their patient's owners can post animals that they are looking for homes for... also you know if you are getting the post from your vet's office you are getting a pet that someone was taking care of responsibly, because you want to get a healthy pet. ... another place to look for postings is some grocery stores have bullitin boards that have items people are giving away or selling.... another place would be to look under pets in yahoo groups .... the news paper classifieds may have something .... also have your son ask at school if any of his friends have a cat or a dog that reciently had kittens or puppies~~

You should really go back to your shelter and take a second look. I feel so sorry for the animals there, having to live in such small cages with no real LOVE. If I had a yard I would take a few. If I had an acreage, I would start my own animal shelter. Until then I am just going to try to encourage others who have the home available to adopt. Well, I wish you the best of luck in searching for that new little friend!

Well, is their a local ASPCA near you? You could try looking there.
I have known some people who loved animals so much that they are "host" families for pets. So that, when a pet is being taken away from their abusive owners and has all the process of being cleaned and "fixed", they are then tested to see if they are hostile. Once they pass that test, the host family takes them in for a few weeks so that the animals can get re-acquainted with with contact-so they can be the dog, cat, horse, whatever-they can be.
Also, look in some papers. You'd be surprised how many people are just giving their dog's newborn pups away-for free!
I hope these suggestions I made helps you. Good Luck!

Try choosing a breed first and then find a rescue in your area. If you search for whatever breed you want (ex: Jack Russell Rescue) you will find some in your area. Or go through a breeder. Just don't go to a pet shop - puppy mills are a horrible thing and they don't need your support. Also try the classified ads in the paper - there are always lots of puppies for sale in there. And keep trying back and the humane society - they get new dogs all the time that need loving homes!

I sent out an email to everyone on my email list that I was looking for a 1-2 year old cat that was neutered and declawed and got a number of people who contacted me after my email was forwarded around. I got a great cat that way. Also check the newspaper for animals people are giving away. A 1-2 year old animal is easier than a puppy or a kitten because you don't have to train them or go through the neutering process. I have owned three dogs and they were all 1-2 years old when I got them and they were wonderful. Here are some listing for free dogs in New Hampshire. http://nh.craigslist.org/zip/178536600.html http://nh.craigslist.org/zip/177925599.html http://nh.craigslist.org/zip/178607470.html

Check with one of the vetrinarians in your area, often they know of animals needing adoption for other than no reason than an elderly or infirm person needs to give up a beloved pet. I know you have tried a shelter, but when you do find an animal ask the previous owner, how well they think the dog/cat will get along with other animals and small children.

There are loads of stray cats & dogs crying out for a loving owner like yourself. Get in touch with some of the animal shelters, I'm sure you will be able to find a suitable pet.

If you're busy and never at home, then cats are great as they can take care of themselves for up to a week... just provide a clean litter box, food, water, and toys. The problem with cats, though, is that you can't take them out for walks or do stuff you wouldn't normally do with dogs.
Dogs are great pets IF you have the time for them. You always have to be there at least every several hours to feed them and play with them. They are pack animals and cannot stand solemnity for too long. Leaving them alone for extended periods will cause them to become destructive and depressed.
For a fast-learning, eager-to-please pet, may I recommend a labrador retriever?

Kittens are soooo cute, but a ton of work--we have an 11 week old one.But then again, puppies are too.Keep in mind also--that sometimes older cats get irritated by the high energy of a kitten.I suggest perhaps adopting a one or two year old, housebroken dog.
Best wishes.

Be patient and try the pet shelter again...you will make your family happy and save a puppy or kitten from an uncertain future.
