We have a gerbil that does the same thing. The only thing that works for us is to put her cage in the laundry room & shut the door at night!

Consider getting a new type of cage. Cages w/ bars aren't really the best homes for a hamster and are a pain to clean. She may end up breaking her teeth on the bars. An aquarium, a 10 gallon tank will do, with a top that clips on would be ideal. Maybe then she will turn to chewing the wooden blocks. If you can't get the aquarium right away, try giving her some cardboard, or maybe some scrap paper. If she likes it, you can always use her as your personal paper shredder. (It would put your junk mail to good use anyway... :P)

I hope you love your hamster enough not to get rid of her. An aquarium might be a good solution. Does she have a wheel to occupy her time at night? Apple branches are a good natural chew that hamsters seem to like. Dog biscuit treats like Milkbones are good for rodent teeth too, just make sure any biscuits you buy don't contain onion or garlic as they are not good for hamsters. I would NOT recommend giving your hamster paper as has been suggested, she could cut herself, but carboard is ok. Just make sure it doesn't have harmful dyes or chemicals. Anything that had food in it should be alright, like a cereal box. There are so many hamster chews on the market, just keep trying and I think you will find one she likes. Your hamster may just enjoy chewing on those bars, so moving her to another room while you sleep is a good idea.

Use the multi-colored "chew sticks" available at petco or petsmart, they are easier to chew then the wooden blocks. Also get your hamster a treat stick, these taste good will occupy your hamsters time. Glass tank will help, but are not nearly as fun as a traditional hamster cage.

DON'T get rid of your hamster!!! They are absolutely adorable and sweet! I have had several hamsters and they all liked to chew on their cages, and because their teeth never stop growing, they have to keep them small somehow. I would suggest putting her in another room than the one you are sleeping in, but I have found that over my seven years of owning hamsters, I have gotten used to the noise at night. Try to live with it for a while longer and maybe put some earplugs in. If worse comes to worse, ignore it anyway and keep your hamster!!!

Try cutting a carrot or apple in quaters and place it in the cage. I'm sure your hamster will much prefer that over cages :)
But remember to discover leftovers overnight.

get a spray bottle of "time out" from your local pet store. its extremely bitter but safe. it will not take long for the hamster to realise: cage bars=bad taste. or just let your prego cat eat the hamster.
you spray the cage bars, not the animal.
